SELKIRK- Michael B. Whelan, 67, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2016 surrounded by his family and friends at home. He was the son of the late John and Edith Whelan. Michael was the beloved husband of Lou Ann (DeMura) Whelan, father to Jody Vogel (Jason), and grandfather "G$" to Amber, Blair, Chelsea, Addison and J.T. Vogel. He is also survived by his sister Judy (late Tom) Pelkey, brother Jack (Sandy) Whelan, and several nieces and nephews. Michael leaves behind many friends, including Bruce and Eileen Coyle, who were always there to support him.

He attended Vincentian Institute in Albany before enlisting in the U.S. Army, where he served two tours in Vietnam. Michael was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Upon his return, he married his bride of 46 years, Lou Ann. Michael worked for the City of Albany as the Deputy Commissioner of the Office of General Services. He also taught code enforcement to the Albany Fire Department. Michael retired from the City of Albany in 2004. In his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, fishing and vacationing in Myrtle Beach.

The family would like to thank Dr. Scott Beegle, Dr. Bhoiwala, Dr. Bashant, the staff of the Albany MICU, along with the VNA and Community Hospice of Albany County for all of their exceptional care.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with his family on Tuesday May 31, 2016 from 4-7 p.m. in the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, 490 Delaware Ave., Albany. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at 10:15 a.m. from the funeral home thence to St. Francis of Assisi Church, 391 Delaware Ave., Albany at 1100 am where a Funeral Mass will be celebrated. Burial with full military honors will follow at 1:30 pm in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY 12871.
