Mary Theresa Agnes Sontz, 89, of Albany, passed away on May 20, 2024, with her loving family by her side. Born in Troy, NY on October 16, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Marion and Blanche Czernecki and adopted daughter of the Francis Casale, sisters Kay, Rita and Janet.
Mary worked for several years at Froelich Stove Store. After her marriage to her beloved husband Ron, they moved to Albany and raised a family. Mary was a faithful communicant and tireless volunteer at St. Francis of Assisi Parish (formerly St. James Church). She also cared for the elderly as a home health aide for many years. She also volunteered at the Veterans Hospital, Child’s Hospital, Eden Park Nursing Home. In addition to her volunteer work, Mary enjoyed home crafts, specially making floral arrangements and ceramic pieces. Some of her treasured memories were traveling with friends, family and socializing with her “Gang” and the Haggerty Family. Mary was a very warm, compassionate person. She had a special love for children, dogs, gardening, garage sales, shopping and talking on the phone.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years, Ronald Sontz; children David Sontz, Karen Cole (Steven), and Michael Sontz (Beth); grandchildren Sommer, Sean, and Ryan; great-granddaughter Mia; her brother Joseph Czernecki (Donna); nephews Marvin, Joey and Dale; and her cherished friends Mary Dolan, Jo Hepinstall. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother Edward Czernecki.
Her family wishes to thank: SPH, Dr. Fillipone, SP Vascular, Heidi, Dr. Sterbach and Dr. Taggart. Eddy Visit Nurses, Jennifer and Brendan. Also, a thank you to her special caregivers, Jerry, Sonya and Barbara.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with her family on Tuesday May 28, 2024, from 4 pm to 7 pm in the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, 490 Delaware Avenue, Albany, NY 12209. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday May 29, 2024, at 10 am in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 391 Delaware Ave. Interment will follow at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY 12871.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
