Wiggand, Robert J. Sr.

GLENMONT- Robert Jacob Wiggand, Sr. 82, died Friday, February 11, 2011 at Ellis Hospital. Born on Sunset Avenue in Albany to the late Jacob J. and Clara M. (Vagele) Wiggand, he moved to Glenmont when he was only a few days old. Mr. Wiggand was a lifelong resident of Glenmont and dedicated his life to his family and community.

As a homebuilder and commercial developer he was an owner of J. Wiggand & Sons, General Contractors (est. 1949) and Vagand Enterprises, Inc. (est. 1969). Mr. Wiggand was a partner in the development of the Voorheesville Shopping Center in Voorheesville, and the Town Squire Shopping Center in Glenmont.

He served his country and community in a variety of ways. Mr. Wiggand served in the New York Army National Guard in the 210th Armor as a Sergeant Major. He was a Charter Member of the Selkirk Fire Company #2 in Glenmont, as well as past Company Chief. Mr. Wiggand also served as the District Chief of the Selkirk Fire Department for many years. In addition he was a Charter Member of the Bethlehem Ambulance Service.

Mr. Wiggand oversaw the construction of the Glenmont Community Reformed Church where he was also a past Deacon and Elder. He was a former member of the Town of Bethlehem Board of Appeals, a former member of the Executive Committee of the Bethlehem Republican Party, and a former Committeeman, 5th District (Glenmont). He was also a Charter Member of the Bethlehem Elks Lodge 2233, Cedar Hill, and a member of the Tri-City Yacht Club, Selkirk
