DELMAR- William VanValkenburg, 75, passed away Saturday, March 11, 2023 at Albany Medical Center surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Bill was born in Albany, the son of the late Earl and Ella VanValkenburg. He graduated from Albany High School and served in the US Army during the Vietnam War from 1967-1971. Bill graduated from Maria College and earned his Bachelor of Science degree from The College of St. Rose. He was also a graduate of the Joint Military Intelligence College. He served a total of 27 years with the Armed Forces and retired as Lieutenant Commander with the Coast Guard in 2004. He was the recipient of numerous awards and medals for his military service including the Bronze Star, Secretary’s Outstanding Unit Award, CG Unit Commendation Ribbon with one gold star and the National Defense Service Medal to name a few.

Bill was a Criminal Investigator with the IRS for 29 years. Upon retirement he went on to work for the Albany Police Review Board, Investigating Unit.

He loved nature and rescuing animals. He enjoyed hiking, and traveling, especially Virginia Beach Military Base, and visiting family in Seattle Washington, Colorado and travels to San Antonio, Hawaii, Germany, Budapest, and Russia. Most of all, Bill loved spending time with his family and dear friends at his camp on Warner’s Lake; feeding the fish and relaxing on the deck with a glass of scotch.

Bill is survived by his wife Ellen Yakel VanValkenburg; step-children Kimberly Morigerato (Chris) and Jason Reach (Ashley); grandchildren Violet Rose and Judas J.; his lifelong friends George Brown (Diane) and James Box (Ellen); and many cousins, nieces, nephews and treasured friends.



Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Bill’s family on Thursday, March 16, 2023 from 4-7 pm in the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, Inc., 490 Delaware Ave. Albany. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 17, 2023 at 10:00 am in the funeral home with burial immediately following in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duel Road, Schuylerville. Due to limitations at the cemetery, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, 3 Oakland Ave., Albany, NY 12204
