ALBANY- Carmen A. Tiongson, 94, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, June 22, 2023. Carmen was born in Candelaria, Quezon Province, Philippines to Moises and Cristeta Alcala. Carmen was the beloved wife of the late Dr. Jose Tiongson who predeceased her in 1994.

Lovingly known by many friends as “Ate Mameng” or “Mrs. T”, she received her BSN in Nursing from the University of the Philippines and began her career in Manila. She met her husband at Quezon Memorial Hospital in Lucena, Quezon where they both worked.

Carmen and her husband immigrated to the US in the NYC area in 1961. They then relocated with their children to Guyana in South America for 5 years for her husband’s work. They returned permanently to the US and settled in Albany in 1973. Carmen was head nurse at the former Villa Mary Immaculate Nursing Home for 23 years until her retirement. She was a wonderful cook, enjoyed gardening, and keeping up with politics. Carmen had a quiet but strong presence and loved her family, friends, travels and career as a nurse. She was grateful to have lived a full life.

She is survived by her four children Marie (Warren), Charles, Christine (John) and Bella; grandchildren David (Ingrid), Matthew and Joseph: great-grandchild Madison; grand-pups Brandy and Bear; her sisters Salud, Zenaida, Chit, and their families; and many relatives and life-long friends. She was predeceased by two brothers.

The family would like to thank her medical team for their care provided during her final years.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with her family Monday June 26, from 4-7 pm in the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, Inc., 490 Delaware Ave. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, June 27, at 10 am in the Parish of Mater Christi, 40 Hopewell St. Burial will follow the Mass in Memory Gardens, Colonie. In lieu of flowers Memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity.
