Albany – Lawrence “Pete” Tenney, 85, died August 10, 2017, on the feast day of St. Lawrence, at St. Peter’ s Hospital. Born in Albany, he was the son of Laurence Campbell Tenney and Margaret Blake Tenney. He served in the Army from 1952-1954. Pete was a 1950 graduate of the former Vincentian Institute and earned a bachelor’s degree in social sciences from Russell Sage College in 1958. History and government were his majors and he was very knowledgeable in them.

He worked for the Federal Housing Administration for 29 years as an administrative clerk. He retired in 1987, then worked ten years for the New York State Office of Mental Health. He was member of Sheehy Palmer VFW Post 6776, Joseph Zaloga American Legion Post 1520, and the Fort Orange American Legion Post 30. He belonged to the senior organization called Neighborhood Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NNORC) and the Active Adult Club at the Parish of Mater Christi. He lived in Whitehall Station; a community off Whitehall Road and was a member of the Whitehall Station Neighborhood Association (WSNA). He volunteered for the card ministry at Mater Christi Parish.

Pete loved the New York Yankees and New York Giants. He knew so much about baseball, football and all about the players and team statistics. He coached his sons when they played in Little League. He excelled at ping- pong. He loved Red Lobster, Ninety Nine, Cracker Barrel, Friendly’s, Burger King, Stewart's Shops, especially their milkshakes, My Place Delmar especially their scallops; Walmart and JCPenney and Hannaford Supermarket. He enjoyed the NBC News each night and especially NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt and former host Brian Williams. Pete enjoyed the TV show National Geographic, animal shows and the Incredible Dr Pol. Pete also loved westerns starring John Wayne and Clint Eastwood. His favorite movies were The Outlaw Josey Wales and Shane. He enjoyed country music especially the artists Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Patti Page, Johnny Cash and Kenny Rogers. He loved patriotic songs and marches, especially Kate Smith's rendition of "God Bless, America" played during the 7th inning stretch of NY Yankees baseball games and "Stars and Stripes Forever" by John Philip Sousa. Pete loved his cats, Samantha, died at 17 years old; Misty, died at 14 years old; and Pedro who is now 15 years old. Pete loved all kinds of animals, especially horses which he said are beautiful and majestic. He loved trains, both real and model. Pete loved the family gatherings on holidays at Steve and Chrissy's house and the feasts that were served. He loved his grandchildren very much and cheered them on as they played baseball, basketball, volleyball, soccer and lacrosse.

His family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at St Peter’s Hospital, 5 McCauley for their excellent care, especially Dr. Kim, Dr Naeem; and to the Nurses; Jolunda, Bethany, Carolina, Noella, Brianna, Jalynn and Jessica; and personal care technicians; Inga, Noah, Beverley, Alisha, and Mo who tenderly cared for him. We are grateful to the kitchen staff : Janna, Michael, Carmen, Georgiy, Delara, Tahirih and Avalon who always gave him what he liked to eat. Thank you to Patricia Carmel NP, Dr. Mohammed Monzur, Dr. James Horn from Capital District Renal Physicians; Sean and Mary Ann at the Albany Regional Kidney Center and Pete’s good friend Esther. Also to Dr. Mary Luidens and Dr. Sara Clark, AMC Endocrinologists; Dr. Michael Bernstein, cardiologist; and Dr. Richard Cliff, gastroenterologist. Special thanks to Dr. Laura Pica, primary care doctor, Sue, her nurse, who took great care of Pete, and to her secretary Nick and office staff.

He was the husband of Olga Nazar Tenney, married June 27, 1959; father of John (Mary Ann), Albuquerque NM; Michael (Alice), Poughkeepsie NY; and Stephen (Christine), Colonie, NY. He enjoyed his grandchildren very much – Lesha, Julia, Stephen and Peter (Stephen & Christine); the late Sara; and Caroline (Michael & Alice); Rico (John & Mary Ann), and Rico’s twins Natalie and Devin. He is also survived by his uncle Steve; a niece Lynn (Bryan), nephews Robert (Sherry), David Dobert (Cheryl), and Dan Dobert; his grandniece, Katie; his grandnephews, David and Robbie and his cousins, David, Rick, Ned, Artie, Jeanne, and Carol. He was predeceased by his sister Nancy Dobert; uncles Don, Ed, Art, Chuck and Pat; and his aunts, Mary, Estelle, Laura, Harriett, and Mary Jane; and his cousin Robert.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Pete’s family, Friday August 18, 2017, from 4-7 pm at the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, 490 Delaware Ave, Albany (518) 463 - 1594. His funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2017, at 8:45 am from the funeral home, thence to the Parish of Mater Christi, 40 Hopewell St, Albany where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father James Ebert at 9:30 am. Entombment will be in the Mausoleum of St Agnes Cemetery in Menands, NY.

ADDENDUM: He loved to eat at My Place in Delmar, NY, especially their scallops. Pete loved the great people at Crestwood Pharmacy, Albany, NY, especially JP and Roland, pharmacists; Steve and Isaac and other staff. He excelled at ping-pong and was a great pinochle player with his dearest friends, Margie and Charlie. He had a great memory of the cards that were played. Pete loved playing poker with his friends, Ellen and John, and their son, Scott and his wife Crystal. He played volleyball in his 30's, at the Jewish Community Center in Albany. Pete was a member of the Helderberg Neighborhood Association (Manning Blvd to Academy Rd., New Scotland Ave. to Hackett Blvd.) and enjoyed their annual picnic in August. He was also a member of the Mater Christi Senior Men's Luncheon Group and Mater Christi Card Ministry. He enjoyed the wonderful parties/dances at the Joseph E. Zaloga American Legion Post 1520 on Everett Road in Albany on holidays such as Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Halloween and Christmas. Pete and Olga celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 2009, Pete's 80th Birthday in 2012 and Olga's 75th Birthday in 2013, at the Zaloga Post. Olga had the "Celebration of Pete's Life" party at the post on August 19, 2017, after his funeral service. Most of all, Pete loved Albany very much. His ancestors arrived here in the 1600's. He was a great supporter of Mayor of Albany, Kathy Sheehan, and the former Mayor, Jerry Jennings.
