GLENMONT- James A Smith, 89, passed away at home after a long illness on Friday, August 13, 2021
Born and educated in Albany during the Great Depression, Jim died during the age of COVID, despite surviving it earlier this year.
He was a fighter right up until the very end, shrugging off every health obstacle he encountered. Even with Parkinson’s taking away many of his faculties, he still did his best to keep it going and managed to always show some humor along the way.
He was a US Army veteran of the Korean War and woked at New York State Taxation and Finance for over 35 years retiring in 1990.
Husband of the late Sandra Stein Smith; father of Brian J. Smith and Lynda ( Elizabeth Wyld) Smith; grandfather of Victoria Smith-Wyld; uncle of Kim (Jay) Reohr; great-uncle of Daniel (Shannon) Reohr and Stephen Reohr. He is also survived by many other nieces and nephews and his home health aides Tracey Shattell and Victoria Gallipoli who provided much care and comfort to Jim during his final months. Jim was predeceased by his parents James and Margaret (Burns) Smith and his brother Donald R. Smith.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with his family on Tuesday, August 17 from 3-6 pm in the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home 490 Delaware Ave. Albany. His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 18 at 10:30 am in Historic St. Mary’s Church 10 Lodge St. Albany. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont.
