Menands – Sister Kathleen Simpson, DC. died July 27, 2022 at St. Louise House, Menands. She was 75 years of age and 37 years a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent DePaul.
Sister Kathleen graduated from Mount St. Mary Academy, Kenmore, New York in 1965. She attended the University of New York at Buffalo, where she earned her B.A. degree in Human Services, specializing in Social Gerontology, and Sociology in 1980. In the nineties she did some graduate work at Boston College.
Born in Buffalo, New York, Sister Kathleen was the second oldest of five children born to Donald Robert and Dorothy Adelaide (Kingston) Simpson. She entered the Daughters of Charity on April 7, 1985, in Albany, NY after working with the Daughters of Charity at Sisters Hospital in Buffalo (1971-1984).
Sister Kathleen’s first mission was St. Vincent’s Medical Center, Bridgeport, CT where she served as a Pastoral Care Associate (1986-1988). Sister then served at St. Mary’s Hospital, Troy, NY (1988-1992). During this time Sister studied Clinical Pastoral Education and was certified as a hospital chaplain by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains.
In 1992, Sister was missioned to Carney Hospital Boston, MA (1992-1997) where she worked both as a chaplain and Director of the Spiritual Care Department. Sister Kathleen then returned to serve as a chaplain at Sisters Hospital (1997-2011).
In June 2011 Sister was missioned to DePaul Provincial House, Menands, NY where she served those in need at Schuyler Ridge Adult Day Health Care Center, St. Peter’s Hospital Cancer Center, St. Pius X Pastoral Care Department, and with American Cancer Society Reach for Recovery.
For the past year Sister has served in the Ministry of Prayer at St. Louise House, Menands, NY.
Sister Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents Donald Robert and Dorothy Adelaide (Kingston) Simpson and her brother, James Donald. She is survived by her beloved sisters: Karen Marie Taylor of Wallingford, CT, Mary Beth Nichols of Amherst, NY, and Susan Patricia Hy of Lancaster, NY, many loving nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews; as well as her many Sisters in Community.
A wake for Sister Kathleen Simpson, D.C. will be held Tuesday, August 2 from 4-7 p.m. at DePaul Chapel, 96 Menand Road, Menands. A reception will follow. A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Kathleen will be celebrated Wednesday, August 3 at 10:30 a.m. at DePaul Chapel. Burial will follow at St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands.
