DELMAR- Cynthia Shen, 90, of Delmar, passed away on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, just five days short of her ninety-first birthday. At her side until the end were her two daughters, Grace and Joyce.
Cynthia was born in Shanghai, China, and escaped first to Taiwan in 1949 when the Communists assumed control and then emigrated to the United States in 1959 with her fiancé, Thomas T. Shen, whom she married shortly thereafter in Evanston, Illinois. Together, they raised two daughters. In the US, Cynthia is survived by her daughter Grace (married to Randall Law), her daughter, Joyce (married to Timothy Shavers), her grandchildren Nicholas Law, Xander Shavers and Jasmine Shavers; her sister, Min Ren Shen, her niece Eva Jun and nephew Andrew Lu.
Up until her aneurysm and stroke, Cynthia lived independently in good health and spirits. People in town always saw her outside gardening, raking leaves/pine needles and shoveling snow. She exercised twice a day on the treadmill and stairmaster, adding zumba and swimming for fun. She traveled the world and was known for her traditional Chinese cooking. She also loved playing mahjong and even took up poker last year. She lived the life she wanted to live up until the end. She will be remembered for her eternal optimism, warm generosity and great sense of humor.
A private service will be held for family members only.
