Sewell, William F.

ALBANY- William F. Sewell, 88, passed away Tuesday, November 07, 2017 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Albany, he was the son of the late Robert V. and Edith (Wirsing) Sewell, and was a graduate of Vincentian Institute. Mr. Sewell retired in 1993 from the NYS Education Department after 15 years of service as a maintenance supervisor. He had previously been a masonry foreman with Smith and Tierney for over 35 years, carrying on the tradition of his family contracting business, R.P. Sewell & Sons, who built many schools and churches in the Albany area. Mr. Sewell was a dedicated Communicant of his favorite family project, St. Vincent de Paul Church.

Bill was a member of the Adirondack Mountain Club, the Catskill 3500 Mountain Club, and a founding member of the Ridgefield Tennis Association, later the Albany Tennis Club. He won numerous Albany County and Tri-County singles and doubles tournaments.

He was the devoted husband of the late Teresa (Caimano) Sewell who passed in 2010; loving and supportive father of Laura Sewell and Cathryn Sewell McMahon; adoring grandfather of Samantha, Kelsey and Madelyn McMahon; caring brother of the late Robert Sewell (Isabelle), Gordon Sewell (Florence) and Virginia Sewell. Uncle Bill was embraced by his wife’s loving family, and is survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews on both sides. Bill was a kind, intelligent and gentle soul who will be greatly missed.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with his family Friday November 10th from 4 to 7 pm in the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, Inc. 490 Delaware Ave. His funeral services will be held Saturday, November 11th at 8:45am from the funeral home thence to St. Vincent De Paul Church, 900 Madison Ave., Albany where his funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 am. Interment will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.
