ALBANY- Josephine Autilio Sano, 97, passed away Monday, July 17, 2017 at the Daughter’s of Sarah Nursing Home. Born in Elmhurst, NY, she was the daughter of the late John and Louise Autilio, and raised in Gloversville. In 1941 she graduated from NYS Teachers College in Albany and later received Master’s degrees from SUNY Albany and the College of St. Rose. Mrs. Sano taught social studies in a teaching career that spanned 44 years. The majority in the Albany School District at School 19 and Hackett Middle School until her retirement in 1986.
Mrs. Sano was a founding member of the NYS United Teachers.She was past President of APSTA (Albany Public School Teachers Assoc.); the first woman President of the Albany County Central Federation of Labor, and President Emerita of that federation. She was the recipient of many labor awards including the Union Label and the AFT Sandra Feldman award. Mrs. Sano was a longtime Communicant of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and a lifelong member of the Italian American Community Center.
She was predeceased by her husband Joseph S. Sano and siblings Rita Martin, John Autilio and Carmen Zembrello. She is survived by her sons; Joseph B. (Linda) Sano of Guilderland, John P (late Nancy Kane) Sano of Colonie, and James P. (Nancy) Sano of Albany; 6 grandchildren Brian J. Sano (Mariska Breland), Christy L. Carpenter (Dane), Joelle Gilmore (Matt), Kathryn, Michele, and Matthew Sano; her 5 great-grandchildren Jackson, Ava, Logan, Jacob and Mia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, July 21, 2017 at 10:00 am at The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Corner of Madison Ave. and Eagle St. Relatives and friends are invited and may also visit with her family at the Cathedral from 8:00 am prior to the Mass. Interment will follow the Mass in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Colonie. In lieu of flowers the family suggests those who wish may send memorial contributions to the National Shrine of St. Jude, 205 West Monroe Chicago, Illinois 60606
