WATERVLIET - Patricia Crammond Sportman, of Watervliet, New York, passed away on December 7, 2023 at St. Peter’s Hospital following a prolonged illness. She was 78.
Patty was born in Ticonderoga, New York on August 16, 1945, the daughter of the late Bernadine (Waite) and Charles O. Crammond. She graduated from Moriah Central School in 1963, and moved to Albany, where she earned an R.N. from Albany Memorial School of Nursing in 1967. Patty spent much of her nursing career at Albany Memorial Hospital, where she worked as nurse for more than 30 years. She enjoyed working with people and was especially fond of her elderly patients. She often kept hard candies and other treats in her uniform pockets to brighten their days and spent time talking with them about their lives and families. After leaving the hospital, she continued nursing, working as a clinical research coordinator at Capital Cardiology Associates Research Institution in Troy and Neurological Research Associates of Albany. Patty rounded out her nursing career working for several years as a visiting nurse for Albany County. She retired in 2014 to spend more time with her grandchildren.
Patty was a voracious reader, especially mystery novels, and she loved NFL football, action movies, and her pets. In retirement, she enjoyed shopping with her friends, playing with her grandchildren, and reading in the sunshine. She was a devoted mother and grandmother to the family she shared with Robert Sportman, her husband of 48 years.
Patty is survived by her husband Robert of Watervliet, NY; her daughter Sarah Sportman (David Leslie) of Mansfield, CT; her son Shane Sportman of Watervliet, NY and three grandchildren: Keira Sportman, and Charlie and Nora Leslie. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Bernadine, and her sisters Nancy and Sally Crammond.
