MULLIGAN D.C., ANGELA SR.

MENANDS - Daughter of Charity Sister Angela Mulligan died Monday, March 29, 2010 at St. Louise House.

Regina A. Mulligan, daughter of Sara J. Hilton and Thomas H. Mulligan, was born in Albany, NY in 1915 where she grew up with her two brothers. She graduated from St Joseph High School, Albany, before entering the Daughters of Charity in 1937.

Sister Angela was an educator for 49 years. She taught in grade and high schools in Greensboro, NC: Portsmouth, VA; Baltimore, MD and Utica, NY. She was an elementary school principal in both Wilmington, DE and Bridgeport, CT. She graduated from St. Joseph College, Emmitsburg, MD and Boston College with a master’s degree in Spanish. She also received a diploma from the Universidad De Deusto, Spain in 1973.

St. Mark’s, Wilmington was one of her favorite missions. She taught Spanish there for 18 years. St. Mark’s presented a unique living situation. A large diocesan high school, it was staffed by seven religious communities. Each community was housed in a private apartment but shared a common dining room and chapel. Sister Angela adapted readily to this new form of community and was a contributing member of joint projects planned by the combined communities.

In addition to teaching several classes of Spanish, Sister Angela was the Chairperson of the Language Department. One member of her department was a Holy Cross priest who she referred

to as, Padre Persia. Father left St. Mark’s to do missionary work but maintained contact with Sister through the years.

Sister Angela always enjoyed a good time. At St. Mark’s she was a “fixture” at football, basketball and baseball games and at music and drama presentations. On vacation sister Angela and her friend, Sister Germaine Catlin, liked to fish. On one fishing boat venture, the two of them caught a total of 67 fish which the crew on the boat cleaned and packaged for them. The result was a gigantic fish fry for all at St. Mark’s. It is no wonder that even today years after the Daughters of Charity have been gone from St. Mark’s people still inquire about “Angie” and how she is faring!

Sister later served as a receptionist in St. Mary’s Hospital, Troy, NY and returned to education as a tutor in the Rourke Center, Troy, NY.

Sister Angela was a genial woman beloved by her co- workers and students.

She is survived by two sisters-in-law, each named Jean Mulligan and many devoted nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday March 31, 2010 in the De Paul Provincial House Chapel at 10:30 AM. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 from 4 PM to 7 PM with a wake service at 7 PM in DePaul Provincial House Chapel, 96 Menand Road, Albany. Interment will follow in St Agnes Cemetery, Menands.
