ALBANY- James A.P. McCarthy, Esq. “Jimmy” 66, unexpectedly passed away November 15, 2022. True to his steadfast nature he lived his entire life in Albany. Born to Justin and Elizabeth Hunter McCarthy, he purchased his first and only family home in 1988 raising all four children there.
Jimmy leaves behind his wife Carol; children R.J. (Marissa), Jeff (Allison), Carolyn (fiancé Jack) and Hunter; his beloved granddaughters Marea, Shay, Cameron and Vivian. He is also survived by his mother Betsy; mother-in-law Anne DiFedele; siblings Justin, Maureen (Jim) Bennett, Patrick (Erin) and in-laws Maureen McCarthy, Blaise (Carol), Tom (Joanne) DiFedele, Chris (Steve) Jannarone; and 19 nieces and nephews.
To know Jimmy was to know his family was everything. From the first day he could dribble a basketball, the game was his passion. From St. Teresa’s to CBA, then on to Manhattan College, there was not a teammate unable to recall his storied career. He was so proud to play the NIT tournament in Madison Square Garden. Finally setting aside basketball he went on to graduate Albany Law School, and begin his career as an attorney. He spent his early years as counsel in Senate Finance, and for the last 15 years as counsel at Trustco Bank, where so many colleagues grew to become good friends. Jimmy was a fierce supporter of those close to him which included trekking a car full of AAU basketball players across states, heading up to Lake Placid for figure skating events, attending every showing of the same school play and rooting from the stands of many family members sporting event.
He was a man of habit and tradition, never missing a year at the beach with family in Sea Isle City. He was perfectly happy on a couch, with a drink in hand, watching sports whether it was home or at the beach. Jimmy was a true old soul. He enjoyed picking up the newspaper every day and racing through the crossword. He was most often seen in full suit and tie attire, no matter the occasion. He was an eloquent writer with a marvelously quick wit. His friendships were select, and ran deep with one criteria - Are you a fan of the Buckeyes? Marty Brix, Bob Meister among others fit the bill. We are devastated by this huge loss and he will be forever missed. Our trust in God provides solace knowing he has been reunited with his beloved father Justin, his brother Billy, Ben his father-in-law and dearest gatekeeper Sarah Beeler.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with his family on Friday, November 18 from 4-7 pm in the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, Inc., 490 Delaware Ave. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, November 19 at 9:00 am at All Saints Catholic Church, 16 Homestead St. Albany (formerly St. Margaret Mary’s). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Howie’s House, a charity to benefit families of organ transplant at support.giftoflifehowieshouse.org or to CHARGE Foundation Syndrome, 318 Half Day Road, #305, Buffalo Grove, IL 60089.
