Menands-Sister Enda (formerly Sr. Zoe) McArdle, DC died September 14, 2022. She was born on March 14, 1920 in Albany, NY, the sixth of eight children of Edward James McArdle and Catherine McGarry McArdle. The family attended St. Joseph’s Church and the children went to St. Joseph’s Academy which was staffed by the Daughters of Charity.
After completing her secondary education, Sister Enda entered the Daughters of Charity in Dec. 1937 and began her life of service as a teacher. She received her Bachelors Degree in education from St. Joseph College, Emmitsburg, MD and a Masters Degree in education from Boston College. She also studied Spanish in Colombia and Puerto Rico.
She served in grade and high schools in Washington, DC; Lynchburg and Portsmouth, VA; Cambridge and Boston, MA; Wheaton and Baltimore, MD; and Utica, Albany, Brooklyn, and Syracuse, NY. From 1999-2012 Sister taught math at the Roarke Center in Troy, NY, to adults preparing for the GED. It was said that she could teach math-fractions, geometry and algebra to a stone!
In September 2012 Sister moved to St. Louise House in Menands. There she pursued the Ministry of Prayer.
In October 2010 Sister was honored by the Capital District Senior Issues Forum with the 2010 Senior Lifetime Achievement Award. The New York State Assembly also noted “her past and future contributions to our community and as a recipient” of the annual award.
Sister was known for her joyful spirit and her love for Saratoga Racetrack. When she was able, she used to go to the local OTB to place bets on the Kentucky Derby for her fellow retired Sisters. She loved and was greatly loved by the Sisters and the staff of St. Louise House. When asked how she felt, her constant reply of “fine and dandy,”will be greatly missed.
She was predeceased by her parents and her siblings;Sr. Teresa, DC; Sister Mary Edward (Louise), DC; Patricia, Joseph, John, Daniel, and Edward McArdle, who was a former Albany Police Chief. Sister is survived by her sister-in-law, Kitty of Charlotte, NC; by nieces, her Sisters in the Daughters of Charity and many friends
A wake service will be held for Sister Enda on Monday September 19 from 4-7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 am on Tuesday September 20. Both services will be at St. Louise House, 96 Menand Rd, Albany. Followed by interment in St Agnes Cemetery.
