Maloy, Mary A.

d. December 30, 2017

ALBANY- Mary A. Maloy, 89, passed away peacefully at St. Peter’s Hospice Inn on Saturday, December 30, 2017, following a nine year battle with cancer.

Born in Rensselaer, NY, Mary was the youngest child of Joseph and Mary Elizabeth (Terry) Maloy. She grew up in Rensselaer and attended St. John’s academy. Upon the sudden death of her mother, she helped run the household and did the same when she later moved to New York City with her sister Margaret, known as “Monie.” Mary and Monie lived in Brooklyn for more than 25 years, moving back to Albany upon Monie’s retirement in 1981 to be closer to family.

Mary’s life was devoted to family, not only to her sister and best friend, Monie, with whom she lived throughout her adult life, but also to her brothers and their spouses, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She and Monie were unfailingly interested in, and supportive of, each family member, happily sharing and celebrating any good news. The arrival of each carefully chosen birthday and Christmas gift they mailed was a cause of great excitement for the children of the family; the only greater excitement was a trip to the Albany train station to pick up Aunts Monie and Mary for a Christmas or summertime visit.

Mary’s was a presence of remarkable gentleness and good humor. She was unfailingly generous throughout her life and characteristically gracious as she faced the tribulations of her long illness. A lifelong Catholic, she always thought more of others’ needs than of her own. She enjoyed watching old movies and was an avid reader; she had a book on her nightstand even during her final hospitalization.

She was surrounded and supported by loving family, maintaining her independence throughout the past nine years largely through the selfless, loving efforts of her brother, Tom’s, family.

Mary was predeceased by her sister, Margaret E., of Albany; brothers, John J. and his wife Rosemary of Rensselaer, and Thomas P. and his wife Alice of Albany. She is survived by nieces and nephews, Jane Davis and her husband Gregg, Joseph Maloy and his fiancé Donna Dibble, Mary Beth Maloy, Judith Brehm and her husband Jerry, all of Albany, Mary Carolyn Schanz and her husband Daniel of Menands, Terrence Maloy of Rensselaer, Sally Behan of Glens Falls and Jackie Maloy and her husband Todd Jones of Las Vegas, NV.; grandnieces and grandnephews, Terry Soloman and her husband Jonathan, Timothy Davis and his wife Diane, Tracy Davis, Nick Maloy and his wife Christina, Tricia Maloy, Joseph, Trevor and Conor Brehm, William and Elizabeth Schanz, John, Emily, and Matthew Behan, Liam and Donovan Jones. She was also blessed by five great-grandnephews.

Her funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday January 3rd at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of St. John the Evangelist and St. Joseph, 50 Herrick St., Rensselaer. Friends and relatives are invited to attend and may visit with her family at the Church prior to the Mass beginning at 9:00 am. Interment will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Church of St. John the Evangelist and St. Joseph, P.O. Box 256, Rensselaer, NY 12144 or Community Hospice, Gift Processing Center, 310 So. Manning Blvd. Albany, NY 12208.
