Albany- Lorenz F. Loerzel, Jr., died on Thursday, October 5, 2017 surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Kingston, New York, the son of the late Dorothy Van Tassell and Lorenz F. Loerzel, Sr.He was raised in Saugerties, New York and spent his childhood in the historic home built by his great grandparents, the founders of The Loerzel Brothers Brewery.

Larry, as he was known to family and friends, graduated from Christian Brothers Academy where he learned to play the clarinet and was captain of the band.

Larry went on to receive his undergraduate degree from Siena College in Loudonville, his Juris Doctor degree from Albany Law School and a Master’s degree in public administration from the State University of New York at Albany.

The majority of Larry’s career was spent in the advancement of education with the New York State Education Department and the New York State Dormitory Authority.

Larry was an avid outdoor sportsman who loved mountain climbing and hiking. He loved to be in a trout stream fly fishing and joining his friends to go hunting.He was also an enormous football enthusiast who maintained a lifelong loyalty to the New York Giants.Larry was an early contributor to the establishment of the Albany Pop Warner Football League.

His many hobbies and pursuit included his beloved Irish Wolfhounds, a love of history with a special interest in the Civil War and the history of Ireland.Anyone who got the opportunity to know Larry will remember his love of books, a good cigar or pipe and a music collection to rival none.His love of opera started at a young age but his musical taste was expanded

to include all types of music from Dixieland jazz to traditional Irish music.

Larry will also be remembered as a kind and generous man that opened his home time and time again to several generations of family members, including his beloved father-in –law, Michael Flanagan.

Larry is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Kathleen and their loving son Brian.He was predeceased by his oldest son, Kurt, his sister Mary Louise and his brother David.He will be remembered fondly by the large loving extended family that he leaves behind.

Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial services to be held on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 2:00 pm at the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, 490 Delaware Avenue, Albany, New York.
