ALBANY-Karl F. Klingenberger, 82, passed away suddenly on Thursday, June 28, 2018 at home.

Born in Albion, NY and a graduate of Albion High School, he was the son of Kenneth and Helen (McCarthy) Klingenberger. Karl was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving as an Aviation Radarman stationed in Hawaii. He attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he met his future bride, Mary Schafer, at a fraternity party.

Karl worked at the Watervliet Arsenal for 29 years, retiring in 1990 as the Manager of Industrial Technology. He was also the owner of the family run, Karl’s Wines & Liquors on Delaware Avenue for 37 ½ years.

Karl was a long time communicant of St. James Church, now known as St. Francis of Assisi Parish, where he was a member of the choir, a former Vice President of both the Parish Council and the St. James School Board and an active volunteer at the annual bazaar and at the food pantry. He was a Past President and Treasurer of the St. James Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society; a Past President and Treasurer of the Albany Curling Club; former team sponsor and coach at Whitehall Little League; a member of the Watervliet Arsenal Operations Directorate Hall of Fame; a member of the Bethlehem/Colonie Elks Lodges since 1968 and a member of the Cardinal McCloskey/Vincentian Institute merger committee.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased in 2015 by his beloved wife of 55 years, Mary (Schafer) Klingenberger. Survivors include his children, Anne Marie McGrath of Castleton, Theresa (Thomas) Bechard of Rouses Point, NY, Robert Klingenberger of New Haven, Ct., Patricia (Mark) Brignola of Delmar and Kristine O’Hanlon of Delmar; grandchildren, Colleen and Brian McGrath, Jessica, Karl Francis and Laura Bechard, Elizabeth Vincent, Eugene Patrick and Nora O’Hanlon; two sisters, Ann (Norman) Clack of Broadway, NC and Rita (Jerry) Hammond of Blairsville, GA.; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 3, at 9:15 a.m. from the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, 490 Delaware Ave., Albany thence to St. Francis of Assisi Parish, 391 Delaware Ave., Albany where his funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited and may also visit with Karl’s family at the funeral home on Monday, July 2, from 4 to 7 p.m. Interment will follow the Mass in Our Lady Help of Christians Cemetery.
