MENANDS- Sister Dorothy Kinniry, DC died February 9, 2018 at St. Louise House in Menands. Sister was 98 years of age and 79 years vocation.
Born in Germantown Philadelphia, on August 21, 1919, Sister Dorothy was one of 6 children born to Michael and Kathryn (Coady) Kinniry. Sister Dorothy joined the Community of Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in May 1938. She celebrated 79 years as a Daughter of Charity in 2017. Sister Dorothy graduated from John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School in Philadelphia in 1937. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg, MD in 1954.
Early in her ministry, Sister Dorothy ministered in Elementary Education for 14 years. Sister Dorothy earned her Master’s Degree in Social Work from The Catholic University, Washington, DC in 1956. Sister Dorothy then worked as a Social Worker for various Catholic Charities for 27 years. Sister Dorothy then became a Certified Chaplain in 1981 and served in Pastoral Care for another 29 years. She also served on the following missions: St. Ann’s School, Bridgeport, CT, St. John’s School, Baltimore, MD, Our Lady of Victory School, Portsmouth, VA, St. Martin’s School, Baltimore, MD, St. Mary’s School, Troy, NY, St. Vincent’s Infant Home, Baltimore, MD, St. Vincent’s Home, Washington, DC, Seminary, Emmitsburg, MD, St. Mary’s Villa, Baltimore, MD, a second time at St. Vincent’s Infant Home, Baltimore, MD, Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New York, New York, NY, St. Catherine’s Home, Albany, NY, Nazareth, Boston, MA, St. Mary Magdalene, Buffalo, NY, Marillac Provincial House, St. Louis, MO, Lourdes Memorial Hospital, Binghamton, NY, St. Vincent’s Medical Center, Bridgeport, CT, Sisters Hospital, Buffalo, NY and Good Samaritan Hospital, Pottsville, PA. In 1995, Sister joined the Ministry of Prayer at St. Louise House, Albany, NY and served there until the time of her death.
Sister Dorothy is survived by one niece, Sister Bernadette Kinniry, RSM and one nephew, Michael Kinniry and wife, Alice, her Sisters in Community and her many friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Michael and Kathryn and siblings, Joseph, Marie, Francis, John and Raymond.
A Wake Service for Sister Dorothy Kinniry, D.C., will be held Thursday, February 15, 2018, from 4 to 7 p.m. at DePaul Chapel, 96 Menand Rd. Menands.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Dorothy Kinniry, D.C., will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 16, 2018, in DePaul Chapel. Burial will follow at St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.
