DELMAR—Kevin A. Mahony, 75, passed away on August 3, 2024 after a long battle with heart disease. Born on August 1, 1949 in Albany to the late James and Elizabeth (O’Hare) Mahony, Kevin was a proud graduate of Albany’s Vincentian Institute and Fordham University. He began his career as a recreational therapist for special needs residents at the former Letchworth Village and spent more than two decades as a personnel administrator for the New York Attorney General’s Office.
He, along with his late wife Joanne (Hanson), leave behind children Brian (Jill) of Oneida, Kristen (Matt) Scully of Millis, MA, Elizabeth of Walpole, MA, Andrew (Ari) and Matthew (Jennie) of Delmar. His six grandchildren, Rowen and Catrin Mahony, Hayden Scully, and Connor, Padric and Isaiah Mahony carry on his booming voice. He is survived by his sisters Sheila Mosher, Aileen Ryan, and Betsey Mahony, and in-laws Ellen and Michael Danis and John and Kim Hanson and many nieces and nephews. His brother Roland Mahony and best friend Danny Leyden predeceased him and are believed to have a bourbon waiting for him.
Kevin’s hobbies included voting for the democratic ticket, chain-smoking, talking to strangers, telling factually questionable stories, rooting for the Giants, and holding court at Swifty’s in Delmar. He was looking forward to his next “corn run” at the Cape this month. He spent his 75th birthday surrounded by family and in the incredible care of St. Peter’s Hospital nursing and medical teams.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Kevin’s family on Wednesday August 7th from 4pm to 7pm at the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, 490 Delaware Ave, Albany. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday August 8th at 11:00 am at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church at 16 Elsmere Avenue, Delmar, NY. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Kevin to the Special Olympics or the American Heart Association. Condolences can be posted at danielkeenanfuneralhome.com.
