ALBANY- Kathleen Flood Keegan personified the word grace. Born in Albany on October 10, 1937 to William A. Flood and Mary Lillian (McGraw) Flood, she passed peacefully into eternal life on September 3, 2023. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
A lifelong Albany resident, Kathleen’s journey was marked by accomplishments and a commitment to others. She graduated from the Academy of the Holy Names and The College of Saint Rose School of Nursing. She began her career as a registered nurse in the Pediatrics Department of St. Peter’s Hospital before getting married and starting a family. When all of her five children were in school, she returned to the workforce, first in medical offices before a dedicated twenty-five-year career as a school nurse teacher in the Albany City School District. Her vocation was a natural extension of her nurturing spirit, helping care for countless children and young adults as well as educate teenage mothers. While continuing to work full-time, she returned to school herself, completing a Masters in Health Education from Russell Sage College.
In retirement, she remained vibrant, visiting family, cooking for just about any occasion, tending to her garden, sharing a long cup of coffee with wonderful friends, and vacationing with family and her ‘gal pals’. She continually told others to live in the moment – enjoy the gifts we often overlook and cherish the small things that make life full and wonderful.
She was always passionate and loved people with all her heart and she was loved in return. At the top of the list came her family – her children Althea, Erin Rappaport (James), Sean, Edward “Ned” (Rose Thorne) and Terence “T.J.” (Karen) as well as her grandchildren Tyler Strauss, Lucy Rappaport, Jack, Ryan and Lauren Keegan and the late Jason Strauss. She was predeceased by her sister Joan Bigley and her brother John Flood and is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was fortunate in friendship and is also survived by many dear and loyal friends who helped make much of the fun she found in life.
The family was very fortunate and would like to extend heartfelt thanks to those who cared for Kathleen over the past several months.
It is impossible to sum up such a vivacious person. She will be remembered for her devotion – to family, friends, and her faith – as well as her beautiful smile and twinkling blue eyes.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with her family on Sunday, September 10 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM in the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home 490 Delaware Avenue. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, September 11 at 11:00 AM in The Parish of Mater Christi, 40 Hopewell Street. Interment will follow the Mass in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.
Donations in Kathleen’s memory may be made to the Albany Fund for Education https://albanyfundforeducation...a not-for-profit whose mission to enhance opportunities for Albany students to learn, grow, and succeed reflects her commitment. Kathleen’s funeral will be available live streamed on YouTube at Parish of Mater Christi.
