ALBANY- Edward J. Kahlert passed away suddenly at home October 15, 2013. Born in Albany on January 10, 1940, he was the son of the late John and Edna (Funk) Kahlert.
He is survived by his dear sister Jean (George) Abatto and by his nieces and nephews whom he cherished: Kim (Frank) Verrelli, Teri (Dr. Robert) Mangano, Mark (Jill) Abatto, and Keith (Trish) Abatto. He was also close to his ten grand nieces and nephews: Alex, Patrick, Jason, Megan, Kyle, Kevin, Grace, Dana, Nicky and Sara.
Ed was a machinist at the Watervliet Arsenal for some time before joining the New York State Tax Department as a Tax Examiner/Auditor specializing first in Income Tax and subsequently in Corporation Tax until his retirement in 1995. He was a lifelong Communicant and former usher at the 7:30 am Mass at St. Francis of Assisi, formerly Saint James Church.
In his younger days, Ed enjoyed hunting and fishing with his Dad, travel, skeet shooting, handball, golf and racket ball with friends. In his later years, he enjoyed the company of family and friends, especially Mike and Jeanne Sullivan, and an occasional trip to the Turning Stone Casino.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 11:00 am in St. Francis of Assisi Church (formerly St. James), 391 Delaware Ave., Albany. Relatives and friends are invited and may also call at the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, 490 Delaware Ave. on Saturday prior to the Mass from 9:30 to 10:30 am. Interment will follow the Mass in Our Lady Help of Christians Cemetery, Jolley Road, Glenmont. Memorial contributions may be made to the Saint Francis of Assisi Memorial Fund, 391 Delaware Ave., Albany, NY 12209.
