Joseph F. Carey

Joseph F. Carey, 95, of Albany passed into eternal life on February 4, 2024. Born on March 19, 1928, to William and Martha (McCullough) Carey, he was a lifelong resident of the City of Albany. He was a graduate of the former St. Patrick's Institute and of Christian Brothers Academy and was a longtime employee of the US Postal Service.

Joe was predeceased by his parents and by his loving wife of 50 years, Virginia (Koreman) Carey, with whom he has now been reunited in heaven. He was also predeceased by his special friend Joan Stanford, by his dear cousin Edward McCullough and his wife, Marcia, and by his devoted friends John and Joan Nerf. Joe was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi (formerly St. James) Church and was a longtime fervent fan of the New York Mets and, in his later years, of Siena basketball.
He is survived by his loving children, Maureen (Robert) Somerville of Wynantskill, Stephen Carey (David Perry) of Los Angeles, and Edward (Katie) Carey of Delmar. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Virginia Somerville, Mary Jane (Timothy) MacPherson, Elizabeth (Justin) Popek, Emily (Kevin) Birgeles, Robert Somerville, Irene (Hugh) Kelleigh, Bridget (Nolan) Gray, Joseph Somerville, Timothy (Tiffany) Carey and Maureen (Nicholas) Snyder. Also surviving are 12 great-grandchildren and many caring neighbors, especially Gloria Romano, Mike and Trish Hardy and Connie and Jack Tully.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday February 10, 2024, at 10 am at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, 391 Delaware Avenue, Albany. Interment will follow the Mass in Our Lady Help of Christians Cemetery, Glenmont. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, 490 Delaware Avenue, Albany, from 4 to 7 PM on Friday February 9, 2024.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Joe's memory to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 1757 Central Avenue, Suite 102, Albany, NY 12205 or to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, 3 Oakland Avenue, Menands, NY 12204.
