ALBANY- Dr. George Harrington, 82, passed away following a short illness on December 30, 2022 in the comfort of his home. Born in Liverpool, United Kingdom during the bombings of World War II, he was the son of Alexander and Susannah Harrington. A much beloved father, brother, uncle and friend, he is survived by his daughter, Dr. Alexandra Harrington, and son-in-law, Onchan “Bob” Inkhamfong, Esq., sisters Anne (Bernard Manley) and Theresa (Edward McNerney) and brother Thomas, and many nieces and nephews. As a teenager, Dr. Harrington earned a scholarship to attend St. Francis Xavier College in Liverpool, where he excelled and was awarded a slot at the School of Medicine, University College Cork in Ireland. While there, he discovered his passion for all aspects of medicine, earning qualifications in internal medicine, medical oncology and obstetrics. Following several years of practice in London and Liverpool, Dr. Harrington moved to Albany to complete a residency at Albany Medical College, ultimately rising to Chief Resident before entering private medical practice. As a physician, he worked tirelessly to ensure that his patients were treated with dignity, compassion and kindness. He served as Chief of Staff at Albany Memorial Hospital from and was an avid supporter of charity work along with his beloved late wife, Barbara. In recognition of his contributions to the medical profession, he was inducted into the Fellowship in the American College of Physicians in 2011. Dr. Harrington later served with the New York State Department of Health, where he held several positions throughout his tenure. He loved travelling, history, languages, storytelling, reading, animals, and gemmology.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with his family on Thursday, January 5 from 4-7 pm in the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, 490 Delaware Ave., Albany. His funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, January 6 at 9:30 am in the Convent of Mercy Chapel, 634 New Scotland Ave., Albany. Interment will follow the Mass in Graceland Cemetery, Albany
