George R. Brandow

January 3, 1931 — November 24, 2024

George R. Brandow passed away on November 24, 2024. Born on January 3, 1931, in Albany, NY, he resided in Albany for most of his life before moving to Glenmont, NY. He was the son of the late Anna Moreland Brandow and Milton Brandow. He graduated from the Christian Brothers Academy in 1949. He met his wife, Joan Dolhof, on a blind date shortly thereafter. They were married in 1953. He served in the U.S. Navy in 1952 and 1953 during the Korean War as an Aerographer on the U.S.S Saipan CVL 48 aircraft carrier. After his discharge, he worked at the American Locomotive Co. and Northern Industrial Services before his employment at the New York State Office of General Services, Bureau of Design & Construction. He retired from the Office of General Services as an Associate Architectural Estimator in 1989. After his retirement he and Joan enjoyed cruising and traveling with trips to Alaska, Hawaii, England, and France. He remained highly active golfing, bowling, playing bridge and pinochle. He was an avid bird watcher, building birdhouses and feeders for himself and his three children. During his retirement years he built several museum quality ships requiring extensive hours and patience. Each of his children display and cherish at least one of his ship builds in their homes. For more than 20 years he and Joan spent the winter months at their winter home in Lakeland, Florida. He is a lifetime Member of the Troy Elks and the Knights of Columbus.

His wife, Joan, predeceased George, passing away in September of 2021. Surviving are his three devoted children: Sharon L. Bridgeman (Patrick), Lakeland, FL.; Deborah J. Baldwin (Jody) Green Island, NY; and James G. Brandow (Wendi Jill) of Glenville, NY. George is also survived by his five grandchildren whom he adored and who gave him unending joy and love: Stefani L. Wolfson, David B. Wolfson (Taylor), Brianna N. Jager (Matthew), Luke E. Brandow, and Olivia L. Brandow. He is also survived by his four great-grandchildren: Mason and Mariella Jager, and Chase and Abigail Wolfson. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara A. Smith, and two brothers, Charles R. Brandow and John M. Brandow.

George would want to thank the personnel at Brookdale Assisted Living in Niskayuna, NY who brought quality of life in his final months. George and the family would also like to thank Laurie Gericke who provided incredible care and support for him and the family throughout the past several years.
