GLENMONT
– On April 22, 2021 beloved husband Chris Ettles, died at St Peter's Hospital, Albany.
Chris was born in London to the late Donald and Hilma (Engstrom) Ettles. He was an only child and spent his formative years in India due to his father being stationed there in the British Army.
Chris was educated at Haileybury, England and attained his degrees in Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College, London. On completion of his Ph.D, Chris stayed for a number of years at Imperial College as a Lecturer.
In 1980 he immigrated to the USA and came on to the faculty of RPI and within a few years was promoted to Full Professor.
In 1981 he met his wife, Gabrielle (Clery) in Toronto and five months later they were married!
In 1994 Chris retired as Professor Emeritus and started his own engineering consulting company, Bearing Sciences Inc. which took him all over the world specialising in hydrodynamic bearings. At about this time, Chris and Gabrielle acquired a Hans Christian 33' sailing boat "Toad" and for the next fourteen years cruised as much as they could around the North East from Boston to Savannah and made glorious memories.
A true Renaissance man, Chris was an artist, poet and a writer. On the first pandemic lockdown in March 2020, Chris finished writing a novel, THE CURE THAT KILLED and by August 2020 it was on the shelves of local book stores and available on Amazon and Target. Favorably reviewed by family and friends!
In addition to his wife Gabrielle, Chris is survived by first cousin, Robin Ettles (Mardie) of New Brunswick, Canada. Also in Canada: Zoe, Roy and Phil Jones of Toronto; Simon and Judy Clery of Nova Scotia; Brenda Scott, Zoe and Kevin Moat of Emsworth, England; and Charlotte and Mo of Perth, Australia.
