Egan, Richard Mackenney

d. December 9, 2020

Glenmont – Richard MacKenney Egan passed away peacefully at home on December 9, 2020 with his wife and children by his side. He was 82 years old.

Richard was born on September 6, 1938 in Plattsburgh, the youngest of eight children of John W. and Doris MacKenney Egan. He was raised in Dannemora and graduated from Dannemora High School. He attended Plattsburgh State Teachers College. He proudly served in the United States Army. He was in the first graduating class of the New York State Board of Regents External Degree Program (now Excelsior College). He was employed by the New York State Office of General Services and Department of Health. Richard retired from the New York State Department of Corrections. While working for the State, he also worked part-time in facilities management at the Villa Mary Immaculate Nursing Home (now St. Peter’s Nursing and Rehabilitation Center) which he continued in his retirement.

Richard was proud of his childhood in Dannemora, and entertained many listeners with his stories of growing up just beyond the prison walls. He was a lifelong lover of sports, especially baseball and football. Later in life, as the captain of Team Egan, he participated in many 5K races in the Capital Region. Richard was a devoted fan of the New York Giants and the Dodgers, following them from Brooklyn to Los Angeles.

Richard was a resource of quiet and steady support of his children and his grandchildren. In his retirement years, he supported his grandkids at all of their athletic events and recitals. He also had a lot of good times with his Peeps who lovingly referred to him as “Magee.” He loved a good “program.”

In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by his siblings, Esther Carrier, Ruth Shambo, Doris Breyette, Frances Benson, John C. Egan, and Elinor and Alice Egan; his brothers-in-law Oril Breyette Jr., John Shambo and John Benson; his nephew Richard Breyette; and his niece Barbara D’Amico.

He is survived by his loving wife Frances Roman Egan; and his devoted children: daughter Kathleen and husband James Hedderman; son Kevin, wife Susan and grandsons Patrick and Brendan; daughter Eileen and husband Patrick McCabe; and daughter Emilie, husband James Hisgen and grandchildren Noelle, Jacob and Gavin; and his beloved “hero” cat, Speckle. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Virginia Egan, and many cherished nieces and nephews.

Services will be private, with a celebration of life planned for 2021.
