MENANDS-Sister Helen Edward Dodd, DC died Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at St. Louise House in Menands. Sister was 94 years of age and 72 years vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, August 4, 1924 Sister Helen Edward (baptized Helen Elizabeth) was one of four children born to Edward and Helen Jallon Dodd.
Sister Helen Edward graduated from St. Brendan Diocesan High School, Brooklyn, in 1942. She completed her Bachelor of Arts Degree in English at St. Joseph’s College Emmitsburg, MD in 1946; her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Catholic University, DC in 1954 and her Master of Science Degree in Maternal Child Nursing, Boston College in 1959.
Sister Helen Edward entered the Community of the Daughters of Charity in 1946 from Good Shepherd Parish, Brooklyn. Following initial formation, Sister Helen Edward taught at Seton High School, Baltimore, MD (1947-1951), St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Emmitsburg, MD (1951) student, then served as a Nurse at Providence Hospital, Washington, DC (1951-1953), St. Vincent’s Hospital, Jacksonville, FL (1953-1956), St. Margaret’s Hospital, Dorchester, MA (1956-1968), St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, NY (1968), St. Vincent’s Hospital, Jacksonville, FL (1968-1970), Elizabeth Ann Seton Hospital, Waterville, ME (1970-1973), St. Margaret’s Hospital, Dorchester, MA (1973-1978), served as a Sister Servant at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, NY (1978-1985), Carney Hospital, Boston, MA (1985-1994) Sr. Helen Edward became a Certified Chaplain in 1989; Good Samaritan Residence, Pottsville, PA (1994-1999) Chaplain, St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Emmitsburg, MD (1999-2000), Rosalie Rendu House, Niagara Falls, NY (2000-2006), then came to St. Louise House, Albany, NY Ministry of Prayer (2006).
Sister Helen Edward was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Edward. She is survived by her sister, Joan Pool and her husband, Bill; sister, Ann Dooling and her husband, John; and her sister-in-law, Mary; many nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews and her Sister Companions at St. Louise House, Albany, NY.
A Wake Service for Sister Helen Edward Dodd, D.C., will be held Friday, January 11, 2019, from 4 to 7 pm at DePaul House Chapel 96 Menand Rd., Menands NY. A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Helen Edward will be celebrated Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 10:00 am in DePaul House Chapel. Burial will follow at St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands, NY.
