DELMAR-Richard H.“Red” Davis, 81, died Tuesday, December 13, 2011 in the Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital. Born in Albany, the son of the late Walter and Helen Davis, he graduated from Christian Brothers Academy in 1949. Red earned an associate degree from Alfred State University in 1952 and a bachelor’s degree from Siena College in 1956. He served as a US Navy Corpsman during the Korean War.
After working for Mobil Oil in Syracuse and American Oil in Albany, he spent over 30 years as a pharmaceutical representative for A. H. Robins. Red was the cofounder and director of The Montessori School in Albany.
Referenced in several Civil War history texts, Red was an avid enthusiast of the Civil War. He happily portrayed the colorful Major General Daniel Sickles in Gettysburg, PA for 20 years, and more recently in local parades. He devoted many years to having the remains of Sickles reinterred to its proper resting place in Gettysburg.
Husband of the late Sheila (Quinn) Davis; father of Richard Davis, Jr. of Morrisville, NC, Mary Gibney, MD of Newburyport, MA and Patrick Davis of Ft. Wayne, IN; grandfather of Brianne Davis of Averill Park, NY and Luke and Cameron Gibney of Newburyport; brother of Walter E. Davis Jr. of Seattle, WA.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, December 19, 2011 at 9:30 am in the Chapel of the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle, 35 Adams Pl., Delmar. Relatives and friends may also call at the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, 490 Delaware Ave., Albany on Sunday, December 18, 2011 from 3 to 6 pm. Interment will be 12 Noon Monday in Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd, Schuylerville, NY 12871.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in memory of Red may be made to the YMCA, 900 Delaware Ave, Delmar, NY 12054.
