MENANDS-Daughter of Charity, Sister Helen Agnes (Helen) Davenport died peacefully on July 28, 2013 at St. Louise House, Menands. Sister Helen Agnes was born in 1935 in South Boston, MA, to Agnes Lasik and Gilbert G. Davenport and grew up there with her three brothers Tommy, Gilbert and Roger. She carried her strong South Boston accent throughout her life. Hearing her say, “Sure,” in her special way was a delight. Sister Helen Agnes became a Daughter of Charity on the last day of 1953. Until 1973 Sister’s days were occupied with the care, mothering, and teaching children at St. Vincent’s Home, Saginaw, MI and Nazareth Child Care Center, Boston, MA. Sister was a childcare worker. She dearly loved her work with the children. Sister taught in grade schools in Wheaton, MD; Baltimore, MD; Portsmouth, VA; and Albany, NY before going on to the next phase of her apostolic ministries in hospitals in Waterville, ME; Binghamton, NY; Boston, MA; and Pottsville, PA. There she fulfilled a multitude of duties from pastoral care for the sick to director of volunteers. Among the sick, Sister Helen Agnes cherished her pastoral care visits especially to those in various stages of cancer.
She became a staff member of St. Louise House in 2004. With care she assembled refreshments for all kinds of celebrations, accompanied Sisters to Doctor appointments, and running special bingo’s and other events as needed. Because of failing health Sister became a resident of St Louise House in 2008.
Sister is survived by her brother and sister in law Roger and Corrine Davenport, Holbrook, MA; her sister in law Helen Davenport, of South Boston, MA and many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
