ALBANY- James T. Curry,Jr., 85, died peacefully at his home Monday, September 19, 2011 with his loving family by his side. Born and educated in Albany, he was the son of the late James T. and Pauline (Hellmuth) Curry. Jim graduated from CBA in 1944 a cadet in Troop F as part of their cavalry. A WWII Veteran, he served in the US Army Company K, 21st Infantry Regiment at Camp Pierson, Japan. After an honorable discharge from the service, he worked for 62 years as a member of the National Association of Sprinkler Fitters, Local 669 and worked over the years for E.J. Matthews & Son, Grinnell, Smith Automatic Sprinkler, RBM Guardian, and M. Cramer & Son, retiring in 1991 from Albany Fire Protection. When his family was young, he served for many years as a Boy Scout leader. He was an avid outdoorsman and sportsman. He was an active member and served as an officer with the Turnpike Rod & Gun Club, Helderberg Rod & Gun Club and the Albany County Conservation Alliance. He served as Dock Master at the Ravena Coeymans Yacht Club. Jim was a member of the Albany Pistol Club and taught hunter safety classes. He was also a member of the Flying Knights model airplane club where he built and flew remote controlled model planes. He was a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics. Over the years he participated in all of his passions; hunting, fishing, boating, archery, target shooting, skeet as well as bowling. Jim had a hobby for all seasons. He was a lifelong Communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, South End Site,(formerly St. John-St. Ann’s Church)
He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Helen E. (Fox) Curry, his children, James T. III (Joann) of Loudonville, Judith of Albany, Michael of Westerlo, and Alicia (Steven) Peterson of Glenmont; his grandchildren Nicholas, Andrew (Gloria), Jonathan Curry; Michael Jr., and Alex Curry; Joshua and Haley Peterson; also survived by his dear cousin, Doris (Bill) Smith of Ballston Spa as well as a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister, Frances Weisel.
The family is most grateful to Dr. Robert Kelleher and his staff for their many years of kind, compassionate care especially in his most senior years.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 23, 2011 at 9:15 am from the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, Inc., 490 Delaware Ave. thence to St. Francis of Assisi Parish, South End Site,(formerly St. John-St. Ann’s Church) corner of Fourth Ave. and Franklin Street where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am. Relatives and friends are invited and may also call at the funeral home Thursday, September 22, 2011 from 4- 8 pm.
Interment will follow the Mass in Our Lady Help of Christians Cemetery, Glenmont. Those who wish may send memorial contributions to St. John’s Center, 88 Fourth Ave., Albany, NY 12202.
