MIDDLEBURGH, NY - Frederick J. Coons, 89, passed Tuesday, June 14, 2022 from Alzheimer’s disease at Ellis Hospital.
Born at the Brady Hospital in Albany to Fred J. and Kathryn (Mahar) Coons, he was raised in Albany and later resided in Loudonville. He retired in 1988 from the New York State Dept. of Labor after 28 years as chief economist.
In 1988 Fred and his wife Beverly retired to Cape Cod, Orleans, MA and were snowbirds to Brooksville, Florida for over 10 years.
In 2006, Fred and his wife moved back to Ballston Lake and in 2009 they were snowbirds to Murrells Inlet, SC. However, due to health issues, they moved back to New York State, settling in Middleburgh in 2019.
Fred graduated from Christian Brothers Academy, class of 1950, and Siena College, class of 1954 with a degree in economics. Fred served with the6thArmy, 9th Division, 39 th Infantry regiment in Europe from 1954-1956.
He attended St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Cobleskill and was a former communicant of St. Michael’s Church in Brooksville, FL. He was a 3rd degree Knight, Council 6800 and 4thdegree Knight, Council 2817 with the Knights of Columbus of St. Anthony’s Church in Brooksville. Fred was also a member of the American Legion Post #186 and VFW Post 10209, both in Springhill, Florida.
Fred was predeceased by his former wife, Rosemary Hyland Coons; his sisters Jean (at birth) and Kathryn McEnaney in 1996 and a grandson Matthew Aidan Coons in 2004.
He is survived by his wife Beverly (Bogardus Massa) Coons of Middleburgh; his children Frederick Coons (Cheryl) of AZ, Gregory Coons (Ruth) of Albany, Gregory Massa (Deniece) of CT, Angela Smith (Brian) of Howes Caves, Matthew Coons of AZ, Peter Massa of Middleburgh, and Andrew Massa of Saratoga Springs. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Hyland Jude Coons of CA, Meagan Coons of Malta, Ryan Coons of Castleton, Sam and Ben Caso of Albany, Joseph Massa (Nicole) of IL, Patricia Harmon (Rob) of CT, Brittany Cushman (Michael) of Howes Caves, Christa Loomis (Mitchell) of Canastota, Samantha Massa of Eagle Bridge, Emily and Faith Massa of Cambridge, Anthony Massa of Saratoga, Jonathan Esteron of WA, Bradley and Stephanie Hintz of AZ; his 9 great-grandchildren Hailey, Ryan and Ellie Mae Green of CT, Hailey Hintz of AZ, Nicholas Massa of IL Claire Cushman of Howes Caves, Ella Elizabeth and Lillian Marie Harmon of CT, Penelope June Loomis of Canastota. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law Bob McEnaney of Albany and David Bogardus (Cheryl) of MO; his sister-in-law Florence Bogardus and Jessica Boradori both of Idaho; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with his family on Thursday, July 7,2022 from 10am-12 pmconcludingwith a prayer servicein the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, Inc. 490 Delaware Ave. Albany. Inurnment will follow at 2:30 pm in the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association on NENY, 4 Pine West Plaza, Suite 405, Washington Ave. Ext., Albany, NY 12205
