Condon, Gladys E.

d. January 31, 2023

ALBANY - Gladys E. Condon passed away peacefully after a long illness on Tuesday, January 31, 2023 at home surrounded by her loving family. Gladys was born in 1930 in Albany, New York, the daughter of the late Nicholas and Florence (Monty) Costa. She was a lifelong resident of Albany and attended Saint Anne’s Catholic School. A modern woman for her time, she began working at sixteen to help support her family. In her late teens she met her Husband William J. Condon Jr. A romance bloomed and they dated while he attended Utica College. William and Gladys were married in 1951 and soon began a family, raising three children together in their home in Albany. They often shared their two-family home with extended family. They enjoyed many outings together and vacationing at Saratoga Lake, Hampton Beach and Wildwood. Having come from humble means, Gladys shared everything with her family and loved nothing more than loved ones gathering to celebrate holidays and family milestones with piles of her famous spaghetti and meatballs, homemade Hershey’s chocolate cake and carrot cake. Along with raising her children, Gladys worked at The Tinkle Shop children’s clothing store and Whitney’s, an upscale department store. She attended Hudson Valley Community College for Keypunch in 1969 and retired from Albany County as a Keypunch Operator where she worked for twenty years. In their retirement, William and Gladys enjoyed the snowbird life in Melbourne Beach, Florida and spending summers and holidays with their family in Albany. They also enjoyed day trips and vacations to Lake George and the Adirondacks. Gladys was passionate for staying healthy and fit – she liked to exercise and enjoyed dancing, especially the jitterbug. After William’s passing in 1999 Gladys enjoyed visiting with family and friends, outings with the Red Hat Society and traveling; however, being home with her family was her greatest joy. Gladys was a proud Catholic and remained faithful throughout her life as an active member of Saint Teresa’s and the Parish of Mater Christi. Gladys had a very generous, vibrant spirit and looked for the good in everyone. She never let a visitor leave hungry or empty handed. Even until her final days she loved fashion and took great pride in taking care of herself and looking stylish.

Gladys was predeceased by her Husband, William Condon; siblings Florence Irish, Alice Giacomino, Marie Wright, Anthony and Nicholas Costa, and son in-law Charles Maguire Jr. Gladys is survived by her children Christine (William) Seward, Margaret Maguire and William (Richard Hillegas) Condon; grandchildren Charles Maguire Jr., Erik (Hollie) Seward, Jason (Elizabeth) Seward, Bridget Maguire and Deborah (Todd) Glover; great grandchildren Erik Seward Jr., Ryan Seward, Caleb Glover and Emma Seward; great-great granddaughter June Seward, along with many nieces, nephews and friends. Gladys will be greatly missed by her family but looked forward to reuniting with her Husband William and loved ones in heaven.

The family would like to thank Doctor Greenblatt of Community Care Physicians and Community Hospice for their compassionate care of Gladys during her illness.

Friends and family are invited to call at the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, 490 Delaware Ave. on Monday, February 6, from 4-6 pm. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 7, at 9:00 am at The Parish of Mater Christi, 40 Hopewell Street. Interment will follow the Mass in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Community Hospice, 310 So. Manning Blvd., Albany, NY 12208 in her honor.
