ALBANY- Timothy Cohan passed away on Saturday, July 2, 2022, at the age of 86. He died peacefully, with his loving wife Marilyn and his children at his side. He was a loving husband, father of six, and grandfather of thirteen.
Tim was born in Albany in 1935, to the late Timothy Francis Cohan and Gertrude (Lally) Cohan. He was the middle of three sons and had a childhood that was the source of many tales of mischief and adventure. Tim attended Vincentian Institute and graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in Architecture.
Not long after graduating from Notre Dame, Tim and Marilyn met at Lil and Bill’s near Thacher Park; Marilyn describes it as “love at first sight.” They were married the following year on October 10, 1959 and began their life together.
Architecture was a huge part of who Tim was, with a career spanning six decades. He ended his career at EYP where he was valued as the nuts-and-bolts guy who understood how buildings worked. In architecture, as with all things in life, he was driven to “get it right.” He was brought out of retirement because of this drive – to help “get things right” on a project at Princeton University, a highlight of his career.
Tim and Marilyn chose to raise their family in Guilderland, with 7 years on Elmwood Street before moving through the backyard to Parkwood Street. They spent 24 years in the Parkwood house where they raised six children, gathered with family, friends, and neighbors for St. Patrick’s Day, Sing-Along-with-Tim’s and holiday parties, and built a life two people can only dream of. Once the children grew up, they started their next phase of life on Berncliff Avenue where Tim and Marilyn lived together for the last 28 years and he spent his final days.
Tim is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marilyn (Tymoski), and his children and grandchildren: Ann (Tim) of Delmar, NY; Greg (Michelle) of Cotuit, MA, and son Alex; Kelly (Dean) Whalen of Altamont, NY, and children Lizzy and Chris (fiancé Anya); Kevin (Johanna) of Melrose, MA, and children Melanie and Hollis; Maureen (Jack) Powers of Delmar, NY, and children Jane, Callan, and Nolan; and Brian (Hillary) of Pittsfield, MA, and children Abby, Grace, Gabrielle, Aidan, and Max. He is also survived by his brothers, Chris and Bill Cohan, sisters-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends may call at the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home at 490 Delaware Avenue, Albany, NY on Friday, July 8, 2022, from 4:00 – 7:00 pm. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 amon Saturday, July 9, 2022, at Mater Christi Church, 40 Hopewell Street, Albany, NY, to be followed by a lunch gathering at Martel’s Restaurant, Capital Hills Golf Course, 65 O’Neil Road, Albany.
