Catalano, Salvatore D.

d. January 10, 2022

SOMERS, NY- Salvatore D. Catalano passed away Monday, January 10, 2022. He was born in Albany, NY in 1930 to Anthony and Rosa (Cambareri) Catalano. He grew up by the Hudson River on Lansing Street with his brothers Frank, Anthony, and Vincent. He would tell you that he was “the last man standing,” as he was predeceased by his parents and brothers whom he dearly loved and missed so much.

Sal loved music and writing. He especially loved playing the sax and the clarinet. During his youth, Sal and his orchestra played big band music throughout the Capital District. He was a proud and decorated Korean War veteran. When he returned from Korea, he attended Siena College. He was an active member of the Siena community, serving as editor-in-chief of the school literary paper and yearbook. He truly loved Siena. Other than the work ethic and life lessons that his parents taught him, he believed the Franciscan Friars were most influential in his personal development. While at Siena, he met his first wife and mother of his three children, Marilee (Shelton), who passed away in 1984.

In 1958 he began a long and successful career at IBM, which took him around the world. Sal started in the accounting department and held many global executive positions in finance, business controls, information technology, and corporate audit throughout his 40 plus years. He was extremely proud of his time spent teaching at the Sands Point Executive training center and earning the title of Corporate Vice President. In his well-earned retirement, Sal always had a project around his home, traveled for pleasure and rooted for his favorite sports teams. He also cherished time with his family, especially around the table enjoying a good meal and a nice glass of wine.

Sal leaves behind his loving wife Corinne Bloomer. He is also survived by his children, Salvatore Jr. (Natalie), Leesa (Stephen) Flanagan, and Marisa Catalano, and Corinne’s children, David (Kate) DiDonato and Laura DiDonato, who will miss his love and guidance every day. His grandchildren, Matt (Elizabeth) Burnham, Corinne DiDonato, Lana Wolter, Kristen Flanagan (David Kasper), Nicole Burnham, Megan (Dave) Lee, James Catalano, Tara Flanagan, Morgan (Christopher) Sanchez, Salvatore Catalano III, and Allison Catalano, will carry on his legacy. He also leaves behind five beautiful great-grandchildren and many devoted nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with his family on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 from 3:00-7:00 pm in the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, Inc., 490 Delaware Ave. Albany. His Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at 10:00 am in the funeral home. Masks are required for all services. Interment will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.
