DELMAR- Loretta J. Carney, 85, passed away Wednesday, February 21, 2018. Born in New York City at the depth of the depression, her father died when she was just five years old. Her mother struggled to keep the family together but she too had an early death.Loretta attended Fordham University on a scholarship and earned her Master’s degree in History from Hunter College. She taught history in high schools on Long Island.During her tenure as a teacher, she was awarded several fellowships but was proudest of the Coe Fellowship in American History. She came to the State Education Department in Albany as a social studies specialist in 1969 and was later promoted to Supervisor of Secondary Education.
Ms. Carney was a Communicant of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception where she served as a lector for more than 20 years and several years as a trustee. She was a Partner of Conscience with Amnesty International, a supporter of SPAC, the NYS Theatre Institute and the ASPCA.
She was predeceased by her brothers Rev. Henry Carney formerly of the Diocese of Rockville Center and Edward Carney, and sister Mary Carney Praeger. Survivors include many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, March 3, at 11:00 am the Chapel of St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 35 Adams Place, Delmar. Relatives and friends are invited and may visit in the gathering area prior to the Mass from 9:30 – 11 am. She will be inurned in her family plot in St. John’s Cemetery, Queens, NY.
