Butman, Jr., Thomas R.

DELMAR - Thomas was born January 18, 1930 in Albany to the late T. Rufus and Anne (Cahill) Butman. He graduated from St. Teresa of Avila Parish School in 1943, Christian Brothers Academy in 1947 and from Siena College in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics and pursued graduate studies in physics at Union College in Schenectady.

Tom worked as an engineer for the General Electric Co. in the Material and Processes Laboratory and in various capacities with the Generator Engineering and Manufacturing sections of the Large Steam Turbine Generator Division from 1951 until his retirement in 1994, he was a consultant from 1997 to 2002. He also was the assignor of several patents relating to the mechanical design and performance of turbine driven generators. He was also a senior member of The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers

Tom served in the Army National Guard's 27th Infantry Division, later the 27th Armored Division from 1948 to 1962 and in the 42nd Division, 27th Brigade and 10th Mountain Division from 1983 to 1986.

He enjoyed camping and singing in the Barbershop Quartet.

Tom is survived by his patient and loving wife of 67 years, Joan (Kampf) Butman, sons John M. (Marcia) of Bismark, ND, Joseph S. (Michele) of Hawthorne, NJ, daughter Kathleen A. (Robert) Sherman of Westerlo, NY and his sister Nancy Lomanto of Georgia. He was predeceased by children Thomas J. and Elizabeth A. (Betsy) Butman.

He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
