SELKIRK-John J. Zupan, 92, passed away Saturday, October 20, 2018 after a brief illness.
Born in Rochester, NY and educated in Ravena, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Anna (Murgic) Zupan. John worked with his father and brother at Zupan’s Lumber and Logging in Selkirk for more than 60 years.
He was an avid gardener and a diehard fan of the NY Yankees. As a younger man he enjoyed darts and horseshoes. John was handy with all kinds of machinery, could fix anything, and excelled at woodworking. He enjoyed his daily “breakfast with the boys” at the Silver Spoon Café in Ravena for many years.
John, like his father, lived a simple life; a no frills kind of guy. “He is a simple man.”
SELKIRK- Jay F. Woolford, 50, passed away suddenly Friday, October 12, 2018.
Jay was born in Albany, the son of William Woolford and the late Sharon Sagendorph Woolford. He graduated from Bethlehem Central High School and was a US Air Force Veteran. Jay was a member of IUEC, Local 35 for 30 years, later becoming business manager.He was devoted to his Local and International Union brothers and sisters.
ALBANY – Salvatore Paonessa, 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, October 7, 2018 in the Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital.
Born and educated in Gimigliano, Italy, he was the son of the late Francesco Paonessa and Maria Guiseppa Scalzo. He immigrated to the US, settling in Albany in 1973. Sal worked for the New York State Office of General Services for more than 20 years. After he retired from New York State he went to work helping with maintenance at St. James Church (St. Francis of Assisi Parish) where he has been a communicant for many years.
ALBANY – In her 101st year, Mary H. (Pompi) Reilly, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 5, 2018 at Evergreen Commons in East Greenbush. She had just last month celebrated her goal of reaching the milestone age of 100!!!!
Born in Albany, she was the daughter of the late Mario and Luisa (Cerasaro) Pompi. Mary was very proud to serve as an interpreter for young immigrant children at her school when she was a child. She was a graduate of Philip Schuyler High School.
ALBANY – Shirley J. (Selke) Burns, 90, passed away peacefully Thursday, October 04, 2018 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital.
Born and educated in Albany, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Ethel (Seibert) Selke,Sr. Mrs. Burns worked as a clerk in the File Bureau of NY Telephone Company, retiring in 1989 and was a member of the NY Telephone Pioneers.
Shirley loved her family, friends and pets, she also enjoyed her home and garden. She was a long-time member of the Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit and an active volunteer at the church.
ALBANY- Joseph G. Shea, 89, passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital surrounded by his family.
Born in Elmira, NY he was the son of the late John D. and Marie E. (Catlin) Shea. He was a graduate of Christian Brothers Academy and earned his bachelor’s degree from Siena College in Loudonville in 1952. Mr. Shea was a Navy Veteran of the Korean War. He worked for New York State as an accountant in various agencies, retiring from the Department of State in 1986 after 38 years of service.
DELMAR – Virginia (Tobin) Blackwell died peacefully at home on Monday, October 1, 2018, in the loving company of her son, Chris, and her granddaughter, Courtney.
Born December 5, 1920, she was the daughter of the late John J. and Emily Crotty Tobin, and sister of the late John C. Tobin. Virginia was a graduate of The Academy of the Holy Names and Mildred Elley Business School. She was proud to have retired from the New York State Teachers’ Retirement System. Virginia was a long-time member of the Normanside Country Club, where she was an avid golfer. She also enjoyed socializing and playing bridge with friends.
On July 31, 1943, she married her beloved husband, the late William C. Blackwell. Together they had three sons, William B. (Paula) Blackwell of Edinburg, NY; the late Jeffrey (Susan, deceased) of Standish, ME; and Chris Blackwell of Albany, NY. Virginia is also survived by her 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She enjoyed a special relationship with her great-granddaughter and “little buddy,” Hazel Rice.
GLENMONT- Antoinette (Annette) Beauchaine was born into eternal life on Friday, September 28, 2018.
She was born on September 10, 1925 in Albany to the late Charles and Margaret (Gerasia) Torre.
Upon graduating from Philip Schuyler High School she was employed as a Draftman for the NY Telephone Co. In 1969 she went to work for the Vital Records Unit in the NYS Dept. of Health, retiring in 2008.
